Egyptian Shrines for Mummification
Canopic shrines, and particularly canopic jars, represent some of the most beautiful artwork of the ancient Egyptians. They were used to contain the internal organs of individuals removed during the process of mummification. The most common form was four jars held within a chest, but canopic equipment could comprise of, at times, miniature coffins and masks.
On the inner wooden chest, text would be inscribed invoking the protection of the four tutelary goddesses, Isis, Nephthys, Neith and Selket. This text would call on these goddesses to wrap their protective arms around, and would proclaim the honor of the deceased. The individual jars would also be adorned with similar text.

Nefertiti – The Great Royal Wife of Pharaoh Akhenaten
(c. 1370 BC – c. 1330 BC)
Queen Nefertiti is known for her elegant beauty. Her bust has been an icon for many women throughout the centuries, with many societies around the world adopting the queen as a symbol of true beauty. The bust was attributed to the sculptor Thutmose, and it was found in his workshop. It is notable for exemplifying the understanding Ancient Egyptians had regarding realistic facial proportions. During their reign, Nefertiti and her husband Akhenaten were known for a religious revolution, in which they started to worship one god only. This was Aten, or the sun disc.
