An ascended master is a great healer, teacher or prophet who previously walked upon the earth, and who is now in the spirit world, helping us from beyond.
Ascended masters come from all cultures, religions and civilizations both ancient and modern. They include legendary figures such as Jesus, Moses and Buddha; saints; goddesses and gods and enlightened beings. These are individuals who have reached a higher state of spiritual awareness and have placed themselves in service to humanity.
The modern concept of an ascended master derives from the teachings of Theosophy, a movement founded in the late 19th century by Madame Helena Petrovna Blavatsky. She brought attention to the idea of secret knowledge by claiming her ideas were based on traditions transmitted to her by occult means from a group of highly evolved humans whom she called the Mahatmas or Masters. These Mahatmas, she claimed, were physical beings living in the Himalayas, usually understood as Tibet.
“They are living men, born as we are born, and doomed to die like every mortal. We call them “masters’ because they are our teachers; and because from them we have derived all the Theosophical truths. They are men of great learning, whom we call Initiates, who embody still, the greater holiness of life.”
After Madame Blavatsky’s death in 1891, the Mahatma concept was further developed by her successors in the Theosophical Society leadership who described the masters in great detail and added Jesus among others to their number. The Masters were collectively called the “Great White Brotherhood.” The use of term white refers to their advanced spirituality (that they have a white colored aura) and has nothing to do with race.
“This is a spiritual organization composed of Ascended Masters who have Arisen from our Earth into Immortality, and yet have said, We are not going on into Cosmic Heights and leaving our brothers and sisters on Earth behind. We will stay and assist. The Great White Brotherhood represents advanced spiritual beings from every culture and race who have transcended the cycles of karma and rebirth and Ascended (accelerated) into that higher reality that is the eternal abode of the soul,” but who can choose at will to incarnate to assist humanity.
Various important spiritual leaders such as Jesus, the Prophet Muhammad, Moses, the Virgin Mary and Kuan Yin the compassionate bodhisattva, take their seats alongside magical or alchemical personalities like the Count of St. Germain, and other mystic celebrities such as Kuthumi, one of Madame Blavatsky’s claimed spiritual guides. There are many, many ascended masters, some not so well known, and some quite famous in contemporary times such as Mother Teresa or Peace Pilgrim. For more specific information, you might want to refer to The Ascended Masters Light the Way by Joshua David Stone, Ph.D. All of these leaders have put aside any differences they might have had in their Earthly careers, and unite instead to improve the spiritual well being of the human race.
Reincarnation is a notable feature of some teachings about the ascended masters who seem to reincarnate in a succession of historically important individuals. In Buddhist thought, a “bodhisattva” is a being who is dedicated to attaining Enlightenment. It also refers to the Buddha himself in his previous lives. El Morya, said to have been a Rajput prince, also incarnated as King Arthur and as Thomas More. Theosophists believe he was one of the masters who worked closely with Helena Blavatsky to found the original Theosophical Society.
St. Germain is believed by many New Age religious groups to have ascended after what was believed to be his final mortal incarnation as Sir Francis Bacon. These groups believe that St. Germain, a mysterious individual reputed to be a magician who flourished in France and was widely known among the aristocracy just before the revolution of 1789, was already an ascended master, which is believed to explain his reputed magical powers.
Ascension and Ascended Masters has not been widely accepted because of the radical nature of transformation that has been ascribed to it. That all humans can conceivably do what Christ supposedly did, is considered presumptuous, if not blasphemous within traditional, western, religious belief systems. That’s one way of looking at this unfathomable concept. Perhaps a better way is to acknowledge that the idea of Ascended Masters, though mysterious and mystical, could be possible, and thus is an accepted component of a New Age belief system.
