Well, this is quite a week.
Mars enters Leo, Mercury enters Scorpio, a Mystic Rectangle stretches across the sky, and by Friday Mercury, Mars, Neptune, and Pluto are packed into a tight conversation around 2°–3°.
But all roads lead to Venus.
On Saturday, Venus stations retrograde at 8°29′ Scorpio, beginning a six-week journey that takes her back into Libra before she turns direct at 22°51′ Libra on November 13.
Venus retrogrades happen about every nineteen months, and this one takes us into intimate territory. Venus speaks to love, attraction, relationship, pleasure, beauty, money, and what we value. Scorpio wants what is underneath all of that. Desire. Loyalty. Trust. Sex. Shared money. Attachment. The places where love and power become tangled together.
Venus will eventually back into Libra, moving from Scorpio’s depths into the sign of relationship and reciprocity. I like that journey. We go down into Scorpio, find out what’s really there, and then return to Libra to figure out how to meet another person with what we’ve learned.
The rest of this week’s astrology almost seems to prepare the ground.
Sunday begins with the Aries Moon conjunct retrograde Saturn at 11°51′. Aries wants to move. Saturn slows things down long enough to consider where we’re going and whether we still want to go there.
There’s also a Mystic Rectangle across much of the week involving Mercury in Libra, Chiron, which retrograded back into Aries on September 17, and the Leo/Aquarius nodes. Self and other, independence and relationship, individual expression and community are already in conversation before Venus even turns around.
Monday Mars enters Leo, bringing heat, desire, courage, creativity, and plenty of dramatic flair. Mars tells us what we are willing to pursue. Venus tells us what is worth pursuing. With both planets changing the tone of the sky this week, desire itself becomes interesting.
Wednesday Mercury enters Scorpio.
Mercury in Libra has been considering everyone’s point of view. Mercury in Scorpio wants to know what everyone left out.
This is the detective Mercury. It hears the pause, notices the missing piece, and wants the conversation beneath the conversation. That seems like exactly the right Mercury to accompany Venus as she prepares to turn backward through Scorpio. What have we avoided saying about love, money, intimacy, attraction, or what we truly value?
From Wednesday onward the Moon is also out of bounds, while Pluto remains out of bounds all week, adding another wild card to an already unusual sky.
Then comes Friday.
Mercury at 2°29′ Scorpio squares Mars in Leo and shortly afterward squares Pluto at 3°06′ Aquarius. At almost the same time, Mars at 2°48′ Leo trines Neptune in Aries.
Mercury square Mars can make words hot and fast. Mercury square Pluto digs underneath them. Mars trine Neptune gives tremendous creative force to imagination, longing, art, music, spirituality, and vision.
All of this is happening immediately before Venus stations.
Mars says, I want.
Pluto says, I must.
Neptune says, I dream.
And Venus asks, is this what I love?
Mars continues moving and on Saturday reaches 3°06′ Leo, opposing Pluto at 3°06′ Aquarius. Individual will and creative expression meet the enormous forces of groups, networks, technology, systems, and the collective. These are also the early degrees we’ve watched light up repeatedly this year.
Neptune, Uranus, and Pluto are all retrograde now, giving us time to integrate and calibrate to the tremendous changes that arrived as they moved into fire and air. This is a remarkably creative time on this planet. New technologies, new ways of communicating, and new forms of making and imagining are appearing almost faster than we can digest them.
And then Venus stops.
In the middle of all that fire, information, technology, power, and acceleration, the planet of value becomes still in Scorpio and turns backward.
What do we really want?
What is worth our time, money, attention, body, loyalty, and heart?
What have we been calling love that is actually habit, obligation, desire, security, or attachment?
And what do we love now that we didn’t know how to value before?
For the next six weeks, Venus retraces her steps through Scorpio and Libra. There is time to find out.
