After the intensity of last week, the heavens give us a little breathing room. Venus stationed retrograde at 8°29′ Scorpio on Saturday, October 3, beginning a journey that will take her back into Libra on October 25. There are fewer major aspects this week, which gives us some room to sit with what Venus is doing rather than immediately rushing on to the next thing.
Venus retrograde asks us to reconsider what we love, what we want, what we value, how we relate, and where our time, money, affection, and attention are going. Beginning in Scorpio, she takes us underneath appearances into the more complicated territory of desire, intimacy, loyalty, trust, sex, shared resources, jealousy, attachment, and power. Then on October 25, Venus backs into Libra, one of the signs she rules. I find that movement fascinating. Scorpio wonders what is really happening underneath our attachments, while Libra asks how we meet another person once we know.
But what really makes my teeth chatter is the Sabian Symbol for Venus’s station. Because Venus turns retrograde at 8°29′ Scorpio, we look to the 9th degree of Scorpio: “A dentist at work.” Leave it to Scorpio to give Venus retrograde a root canal.
The image is actually perfect. We use our teeth every day without thinking much about them until something begins to hurt. We compensate, chew on the other side, avoid the tender spot, and carry on until the discomfort finally asks for our attention. Relationships, money, intimacy, and desire can work much the same way. We can accommodate something for a very long time before realizing how much energy we’ve spent working around the sore spot.
And the dentist doesn’t pull every tooth. The work is to find the tender place, clear away what has deteriorated, repair what can be repaired, and preserve what is still healthy. That gives me a very different way of thinking about this Venus retrograde. This is less about assuming something has to end and more about discovering what needs our attention. By the time Venus backs into Libra on October 25, we may understand much more clearly what we’re actually trying to bring back into balance.
Wednesday, October 7, Mars at 5°24′ Leo sextiles Uranus at 5°24′ Gemini. This is lively astrology. Mars wants action and Uranus wants something new, while fire and air feed one another beautifully. An unexpected idea, conversation, invitation, piece of technology, or creative impulse could get something moving. There is an experimental quality here that encourages us to try the different route, play with the new tool, or follow the strange idea long enough to see where it goes.
Then Thursday comes along and does almost the opposite. The Moon spends the entire day in Virgo void of course.
A void-of-course Moon occurs when the Moon has made her final major applying aspect in a sign and will make no more before entering the next sign. The Moon is still moving, of course, but astrologically she has finished her business where she is. Traditional astrologers have long paid close attention to these periods, particularly in horary and electional astrology, because matters initiated under a void Moon may fail to develop as expected, change direction, or simply go nowhere.
That doesn’t mean we need to crawl back into bed and pull the covers over our heads. Virgo can always find something useful to do. Finish what is already underway. Clean the kitchen, answer routine emails, organize the desk, weed the garden, edit something you’ve already written, or take care of the ordinary business of being alive. A void Moon can be wonderfully spacious when we stop demanding that every hour produce something new.
I actually love having such a long void Moon in the middle of a Venus retrograde. We live in a culture obsessed with forward motion. We launch, decide, optimize, produce, respond, and immediately begin looking for whatever comes next. Yet Venus is moving backward while the Moon spends an entire day with no further aspects to perfect. There is something almost radical about allowing a little empty space into the week and seeing what becomes visible when we quit trying to fill it.
Then Saturday Venus at 7°21′ Scorpio squares Mars at 7°21′ Leo, and desire meets action. Venus describes what we want and Mars describes how we go after it. In a square, those impulses can rub against each other. One person may want closeness while another wants room. We may want the beautiful thing while our bank account has another opinion. We may discover that what attracts us and what actually serves us are two different things.
Because Venus is retrograde, I would pay particular attention to what returns around this square. An old desire, an old relationship pattern, an old argument about money, something we thought we wanted, or something we denied wanting may circle back into view. We can observe what arises without immediately deciding what it means or what to do about it.
That may be the quiet wisdom underneath this entire week. Venus is retracing her steps, the Moon gives us an unusually long pause, and even the Mars-Uranus sextile favors experimentation over following the established route. There are times when the cosmos pushes us forward, and there are times when it leaves enough empty space around us to discover whether we’re still headed somewhere we actually want to go.
