Twin Flames, the Ultimate Romantic Relationship

“Out of the original unity of being there is a fragmentation and dispersal of beings, the last stage being the splitting of one soul into two. And consequently, love is the search by each half for the other half on earth or in heaven.”
Sufi writing, 12th Century

We’ve all heard the term, “Soul Mate.” These are friends and loved ones who are responsive to our love, and with whom we are deeply connected. We share a common path and purpose and have had connections in past lives. Soul Mates may have been our parents, siblings, spouses, friends, children. Whatever the relationship that was in past lives, they have agreed to come back to join us once again. The reason for this rejoining is so that we can each achieve balance in our lives and work on certain issues that still remain from past incarnations. Our Soul Mates are our spiritual family. By connecting with them, they help us to wake up and remember our purpose.

Most of the time when we think of Soul Mates, we are thinking of love relationships, but Soul Mates can just as well join us as business partners, healing relationships, and of course, love relationships. Any relationship, in fact, can exemplify Soul Mates. These are truly our friends from many lifetimes who come to play again with us on this earth. Often they come into our lives for a specific time or event. They may come to assist us in a specific learning and then move on.

So if Soul Mates are our spiritual family – anyone with whom we have had a past life experience – what specifically are Twin Flames? As the Sufi masters intimated, when Souls choose to enter into physicality, they are split into masculine and feminine aspects. Twin flames, twin rays, or divine counterparts are all words that refer to the two halves of the same soul spark, ourselves in another body, a pair of partners forming together a union that is spiritual wholeness.

We incarnate to learn and grow, but the deep seated yearning for that wholeness, lingers within each of us and the desire for reunion and completeness endures over the ages. It would seem that this desire for oneness must be the foundation upon which all relationships are built, but only one other in all the universe can satisfy this desire.

Sometimes we have the opportunity to reconnect with our other half or Twin Flame. The chances are that we meet our Twin Flame briefly in many lifetimes, but one or both is not ready for the intensity of this connection. As such, it is very rare for twin flames to be embodied on the planet at the same time and to get together in an intimate relationship. Of ten it doesn’t happen until both are in their last incarnation. The Twin Flame is the most intense relationship there is, and the two beings must be highly evolved and have completed a lot of clearing work with themselves to be fully ready for such a reunion.

Once in relationship, the bond between Twin Flames can only be compared to the bond between identical twins. Twin Flames are aware of each other’s thoughts, feelings, desires and needs at such a profound level, it is hard to imagine. The depth of love is such that to be apart even for a day is a hardship. It is this depth of love that reminds them of the Oneness of Light to which they are returning. By anchoring this love in the physical, not only are they preparing for their own ascension, but they are also leaving an imprint for others to follow.

What really sets Twin Flames apart from soul mate relationships is the profound degree of completeness experienced and the overwhelming sense of spirituality unique to them. Twins want to serve humanity in some meaningful way. There is also a very sacred sense of intimacy and feeling of divinely inspired wholeness that one finds within a twin soul relationship. It is not by accident nor is it without purpose. This is a magical, mystical pairing and the ultimate romantic relationship for sure.
