Behind the scenes at the Center

When visitors come to The Center for the New Age, they pretty much expect to find the property the same way they always have for the last eighteen years. Very little thought goes into how we keep it that way. The dedication and commitment it takes to keep the doors open at the Center is a group effort. Each person has an integral part in the puzzle.
First of all, consider the challenge of being right on Oak Creek. Although it’s the best location in Sedona, it isn’t without its challenges.
Yesterday for example. I woke up at 6am. As I started to make breakfast, I got an emergency call from JoDe. The parking lot was flooded, with water entering Scottie’s wing. This has happened many times before during the monsoons. We have a storm drain we can open to get rid of the excess water. Something was wrong this time, it wouldn’t open and the water was knee high.
Robert and I quickly threw on our clothes and raced to the center. Oops, I forgot my coffee. Oh well. By the time we pulled up, JoDe had gotten the top of the drain off but was still knee deep in water. Something was different. Robert stripped off his shirt and laid in the muddy water. He tried to remove the cap blocking the drain. At one point his face was even in the water. No luck, it wouldn’t budge. We raced to Ace hardware, where Robert had the staff there designed and built a special tool to open the plug. Still no luck.
Then I remembered. When the third unit had tree roots growing into the plumbing, the rooter guys had to install new drain equipment. They must have changed something. But it’s still only 7am and they are not answering their phone. Nancy arrives and man’s the phones, while I try to help Robert and JoDe, who by now have come up with an alternate plan. Using several hoses, they are able to siphon the water into the creek.
I finally get the rooter guy on the phone. He’s confused and says it should open easily. But he doesn’t tell me that they changed the whole system and there is another clean out. We are trying to open the wrong one. He says “They will come by to help, but they are on another job”. Robert and JoDe continue the tedious process of siphoning the water and digging ditches to have it flow. Finally the water has subsided enough to see the other drain, and they successfully open it.
In the meantime, my son Karl and grandson Cole show up with shovels and tools. They help Robert, who is now exhausted, to dig more ditches to channel the water and clear the parking lot as customers start arriving. Even though he was covered in water, Robert forgot to drink water. He later suffered de-hydration. This is another important point. Because of our altitude, our bodies use more water. We have to remember to keep hydrated. Sedona is a beautiful desert, but it’s still a desert.
Our parking lot has been graded several times over the last eighteen years. The creek has changed direction many times. We used to have a back yard and bridges to the island. But several major floods have rearranged the landscape. When ADOT rebuilt the roads and bridges, they took much of our parking lot. They also reconfigured the bank causing us to pretty much loose creek access. The challenges have been many. Once we even had a fire on the island, started by a homeless person camping. With it all, the Center continues to thrive and flow with the punches. I’ve got to believe we have help from above. Many businesses closed during the road construction, we’re still here. Year after year, despite all the challenges, the supposed meltdown of our economy, we continue to help Sedona’s spiritual visitors find hope and solutions to their own challenges. We continue to supply jobs for our many employees and continue to be a place where Psychic readers and spiritual counselors can make a nice living doing the work they love.
The work is not over. The parking lot needs re-grading and the re-installation of the drainage, removed by ADOT. If any of the Readers have ideas and would like to contribute work or knowledge, we would love the help. In the meantime, I would personally like to thank Robert, who has been an amazing addition to my life and the Center; I would like to thank Karl and Cole for all their work. Susan for her creative bookkeeping and sometimes psychological counselor to the readers, Nancy for her dedication and commitment I can always count on. Maria for her amazing sales and numbers ability. Caroline for her sense of humor and ability to get along with everyone, Dash for her caring, compassion and patience with the readers, JoDe for her willingness to do whatever it takes and her ability to switch hats at a moment’s notice. Jamie for never giving up the fight against evil.
And of course, I wish to thank each and every Reader for your dedication to your craft and your willingness to participate in this soap opera we call The Center for The New Age. Thank you all for being in Sedona and being in my movie.
