The New Age is a mosaic of world religions borrowing concepts and practices from a variety of philosophies. In this regard, Lord Krishna, usually regarded as one of the most powerful incarnations of Lord Vishnu, the Godhead of the Hindu Trinity of deities, assumes a significant role in the New Age.
Krishna –his name literally means “black” or “blue” – is often depicted with blue skin, playing the flute that represents his melody of love to all peoples. Krishna is frequently shown with his childhood devotee Radha, and is remembered and worshipped as Radha-Krishna, symbolizing the eternal love between people and god.
For generations, Krishna has been considered by Hindus the leader, hero, protector, philosopher, teacher and friend all rolled into one. He has influenced Indian thought, life and culture in myriad ways –not only its religion and teachings, but also its mysticism and every aspect of the Indian tradition.
It has been accepted by both Indian as well as Western scholars that the period between 3200 and 3100 BC is the time in which Lord Krishna lived on earth. He is believed to have lived for 125 years. Whether he was a human being or a god-incarnate, he has been ruling the hearts of millions for over five millennia. In the words of Swami Harshananda, “If a person can affect such a profound impact on the Hindu race affecting its psyche and ethos and all aspects of its life for centuries, he is no less than God.”
The International Society for Krishna Consciousness is a worldwide confederation of more than 400 centers, the devotees of which worship Krishna as the highest form of God. To devotees, Radha represents Krishna’s divine female counterpart, the original spiritual potency and the embodiment of divine love.
The popular nickname of “Hare Krishnas” for followers of this movement comes from the chant that members sing aloud or intone quietly. This mantra contains the names of God -Krishna and Rama (meaning the highest eternal pleasure). As for the word “hare” (pronounced huh-ray), it’s a call to Krishna’s divine energy, the thesis being that when we place ourselves in harmony with Krishna and Krishna’s energy, we return to our natural, pure state of consciousness. This is what is called, “Krishna consciousness.”
Krishna consciousness is not something imposed on the mind. On the contrary, it’s already inside of each of us, waiting to come out. Chanting Hare Krishna brings out that natural, pure state of mind. The chant, the mantra, is a vibration of sound that cleanses the mind, freeing it from anxiety and illusion. Krishna and His energy are fully present in the sound of the mantra, so even if we don’t know the language or intellectually understand how it works, it is believed that by coming in touch with Krishna, our life will become happier.
