Fasting

FastingFasting, By Anita Dalton, Owner of The Center for The New Age for 20 years.
Since the days of Jesus Christ, who fasted for 40 days, people have abstained from food for many reasons. Health, politics, spiritual enlightenment are some reasons, but for me it’s always been about weight loss. I remember battling food since kindergarten. When they had to order my school uniform in a “chubby” size, I’d had enough. I refused to eat for a week, much to the dismay of my Italian mother who was sure I was going to die from hunger. Most people in good health can go without food for many days, but the body must have water.
As a young adult, determined to be thin, I tried every crazy diet imaginable. All I did was slow my metabolism and gain more weight. The battle continued until I finally reached the absurd weight of 365lbs. I had high blood pressure and could barely walk. Doctors merely handed me a 1000 calorie diet and pills. That’s when I turned the whole battle over to Spirit, God, Higher Self, whatever you want to call it. It was like a switch flipped in my head and I knew what to do. The process took two years. I lost over two hundred pounds and have kept it off for ten years. Part of that process was fasting, correctly this time. The fast was not pleasant. Food was an addiction for me and a social pleasure. The good news is after three days you lose your desire for food. My blood pressure became normal and I now have a totally different relationship with food.
During the weight loss, I fasted many times on vegetable juices and water and used colonics to detox. The results were encouraging; I felt satisfied and lost weight. I also noticed my taste buds changing. Soon I actually liked the juice. As I felt stronger, I even started to exercise. To this day I worked out at the gym at least three times a week. I pretty much eat whatever I want these days and if I gain a pound or two, I’ll do a short fast.
About a year or two ago, a friend asked me to try the “Master Cleanse”. He said it worked better for him if he had a buddy doing it too. I figured it couldn’t hurt, so I agreed to do it for a week or so. The first days were hard. We went to the Movie Theater and when a woman in front of me spilled some popcorn, I almost dove for it. After that, I really didn’t think about food. The cleanse starts with an herbal laxative tea both morning and evening. We drank between six and twelve glasses of lemonade, which consisted of organic lemon, a high grade maple syrup, and a small amount of cayenne pepper to wash out mucus.
I really didn’t want to start eating again. On my birthday, I spent the day on Lake Powell, the first time I ever went there without food or drink. It was a glorious experience. Everything seemed clear and fresh, the sky, the water, the rocks. This was my fortieth day on the fast and I still wasn’t hungry. We gradually tapered of the cleanse with broth and juices. The most important thing is learning how to come off the fast, allowing the body to adjust itself to handle solid food again. Since my weight was pretty stable, I only lost about 15 lbs. People overweight would lose more. I highly recommend periodic fasting as a healthy way to lose weight and keep it off. There is a book called The Master Cleanser by Stanley Burroughs for most important details and you can Google the Master Cleanse recipe.
