The Power of Positive Thinking

Robert, my beloved, and I are going to Texas this weekend. Now Texas hasn’t really been on my Bucket List of places to visit. So why are we spending money to fly there and stay in an extravagant resort? It’s because we like hanging out with positive people. We recently joined a club just to meet more positive people.
I have been in the self-help business for over twenty years here in Sedona. A famous Texan named Zig Ziglar once said, “You can get anything in life by just helping as many people as possible first.” He was correct. My entire life has been helping people and it has paid off not only in my success, but by helping others succeed. It’s been very rewarding in so many ways and I just can’t imagine my life being any better.
Most of us were not raised by positive parents. So how do we get positive? I was raised by parents who told me money didn’t grow on trees. They told me I needed a husband to support me and if I wanted a career, I should be a hairdresser or a secretary. Not that there is anything wrong with either of these careers, it’s just that they were about the only ones available to women of middle income families. They were great parents and they could only teach me what they knew, what they learned from their parents. It was the Archie Bunker generation.
The world has changed and we have become the information generation. Thanks to TV and the Internet we can access more positive information, but only if we choose to. There is even more negative information out there than ever before. You have to choose who to listen to.
My daughter has three children and is a very positive, successful woman. Recently, due to an illness, her twins went to live with their dad. The dad is a good person. He was raised in a very different environment. I have noticed the difference in the twins in only one year. They are less confident, and have developed the money doesn’t grow on trees mentality.
Recently we had an Easter egg hunt. When there was no money in the eggs, each child found the same amount of eggs. Then I put money in the eggs and time after time the twins found less and less eggs. They became discouraged and didn’t want to play. Their brother, who was sure he would find the most money, did. So joyful expectancy. Then because he believes money comes easily and effortlessly, he shared his bounty with his brother and sister. Attitude makes all the difference in the world.
So called Positive thinking has gotten a lot of attention thanks to self-help books like the “Secret”, “Think and Grow Rich”, “The Magic of Thinking Big” to name a few. All these books teach the individual how to take responsibility for their own successes and failures and not blame outside forces for bad outcomes in your life.
People who think positive are less affected by stress, have healthier lives, exercise more, follow nutritious diets and avoid unhealthy lifestyle behaviors. They walk with a spring in their step and are a joy to be around. Everything we create starts with a thought. Remember that old saying; the glass is either half empty or half full. Fill your glass today with positive happy thoughts and step aside and watch your life take a turn for the better.
