In many countries May Day is a celebrated Holiday. It originated with the Druids in the British Isles before the birth of Christ. The Pagan Holiday was the second most important holiday of their year and brought with it the Beltane Festival.
May 1 was seen as the beginning of their New Year and celebrated with fires and the observation of the Pagan Ancient fertility rites were performed throughout their world. The fire itself was thought to lend life to the Springtime Sun. Cattle were driven through the fire to purify them. Lovers passed through the smoke for good luck.
The Romans came to occupy the British Isles and celebrated the beginning of May with lavish feasts devoted to the worship of Flora, the Goddess of Flowers. A five day celebration called Floralia started April 28 and ended May 2. The rituals they brought with them were gradually added to Beltane.
May Day was discouraged during the Puritan era and was outlawed by Parliament. Though it was revived when the Puritans lost power in England, it never really took on the old rituals and eventually came to be regarded as a day of joy and merriment for children rather than ancient fertility rites.
By the Middle Ages every English village had a Maypole. There were competitions for the largest and most beautiful pole. People would dance around the Maypole just like their forefathers did. Ribbons and streamers crossing back and forth, choosing a May Queen, hanging of May baskets on doorknobs are some of the old European traditions still observed to this day.
