Tai Chi

Tai ChiTai chi is a Chinese exercise system that uses slow, smooth body movements to achieve a state of relaxation of both body and mind. Tai chi is often described as “meditation in motion,” but it might as well be called “medication in motion” as there is growing evidence that this mind-body practice that originated in China as a martial art, has value in treating or preventing many health problems.

In this low impact, slow-motion exercise, you go without pausing through a series of motions. As you move, you breathe deeply and naturally, focusing your attention – as in some kinds of meditation – on your bodily sensations. Tai chi differs from other types of exercise in several respects. The movements are usually circular and never forced, the muscles are relaxed rather than tensed, the joints are not fully extended or bent, and connective tissues are not stretched.

It takes some time to master what looks like a simple position, but when properly done, postures are relaxed, artful and flowing with the circular and rhythmic movements of one position flowing seamlessly into the next. Strict attention to body position is critical and proper breathing is equally important. The movements are slow, continuous and without strain, breathing should correspond and be effortless yet deep. Mental and physical balance is essential to proper and sound practice.

Five essential qualities of Tai Chi are:

  • Slowness – develops awareness
  • Lightness – makes movements flow
  • Balance – presents body strain
  • Calmness – maintains continuity
  • Clarity – focuses the mind

Tai chi has both physical and mental benefits. If done regularly, it improves muscle tone, flexibility, balance, and coordination. The practice heightens and improves energy, stamina and agility, sharpens reflexes and provides an overall sense of well-being. This gentle form of exercise can prevent or ease many ills of aging and is the perfect activity for all of our days.
