The Greeks believed amethyst gems could prevent intoxication which is why the word “amethyst” comes from the Greek word “amethystos” which interprets to “not drunken.” European soldiers wore amethyst amulets as protection in war with the belief that amethysts can heal people and offer them a clear head.
