Homeopathy

We’ve all heard the old saying “opposites attract,” but are we familiar with the principle of “like cures like?” This is the standard on which the practice of Homeopathy is based.
Many of us have heard of Homeopathy, but don’t really understand what it is, what it does, why it works, and why it might be considered as an alternative to traditional Western medicine, or even if it should be considered as such.
What is Homeopathy? Simply put, Homeopathy is a form of alternative medicine that treats a disease with heavily diluted preparations created from substances that would ordinarily cause effects similar to the disease’s symptoms. It interprets diseases and sickness as caused by disturbances in the life force and sees these disturbances as manifesting themselves in unique symptoms.
Homeopathy maintains that the vital force has the ability to react and adapt to internal and external causes. Homeopaths refer to this as the “law of susceptibility” which states that a negative state of mind can attract hypothetical disease entities called miasms to invade the body and produce symptoms of diseases.
The roots of Homeopathy date back to the late 1800’s and a medical doctor, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. Dr. Hahnemann didn’t agree with some of the widely accepted medical practices of his time such as bloodletting, and so he searched for better, gentler, healthier methods of healing. He evolved a system whereby homeopathic preparations are serially diluted, with shaking after each step, under the belief that this increases the effectiveness of the treatment. This dilution often continues until no molecules of the original substance remain.
Hahnemann observed from his experiments with cinchona bark, used as a treatment for malaria, that the effect he experienced from ingesting the bark was similar to the symptoms of malaria. He reasoned that cure proceeds through similarity, and treatments must be able to produce symptoms in healthy individuals similar to those of the disease being treated. Through further experiments with other substances, Hahnemann conceived the concept of “like cures like” as a fundamental healing principle.
Remedy is the technical term used in homeopathy to refer to a substance prepared with a particular procedure and intended for treating patients. In order to determine which specific remedies could be used to treat which diseases, Hahnemann experimented on himself and others for several years before using remedies on patients. The method used for determining which remedies were suitable for specific diseases was called “proving.” A homeopathic proving is the method by which the profile of a homeopathic remedy is determined.
Hahnemann believed that by inducing a disease through use of his “remedies,” the artificial symptoms empowered the vital force to neutralize and expel the original disease and that this artificial disturbance would naturally subside when the dosing ceased.
In producing treatments for diseases, homeopaths use a process called “dynamisation” whereby the remedy is diluted with alcohol or distilled water. While Hahnemann advocated remedies that present symptoms similar to those of the disease, he believed concentrated doses would only intensity the symptoms and exacerbate the condition, hence the dilution of the remedies. Homeopaths believe that the vital energy of the diluted substance is activated and its energy released by vigorous shaking of the substance.
The effectiveness of homeopathy has been in dispute since its inception and more so as pharmaceutical drugs became more prevalent in the medical marketplace. Nonetheless, in the mid to late 1970’s, homeopathy made a significant comeback and sales of some homeopathic companies increased considerably.
In the 1990’s, the medical profession surprisingly began to integrate Homeopathic concepts, and big mainstream pharmacies began to produce and advertise the same types of products that heretofore had been ignored or criticized as quackery. Homeopathy has come full circle, from the perhaps mystical-in-concept experiments of the 1880’s to mainstream medicine of the 21st century. Dr. Hahnemann must be cheering!
Apart from the symptoms of the disease, homeopaths may use aspects of the patient’s physical and psychological state to select between treatments. Homeopathic reference books known as repertories are then consulted, and a remedy selected based on the index of symptoms.
Homeopathic remedies are generally considered safe, with rare exceptions. In many countries, the laws that govern the regulation and testing of conventional drugs do not apply to homeopathic remedies.
